5-star food standards rating for hospital catering

Catering staff at popular hospital Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre are celebrating a 5-star rating from the Food Standards Agency, following a spot visit from inspectors.

The catering facilities at the hospital, including the Care Café, were rated for compliance against food hygiene practices, structural requirements (including cleaning) and confidence in management. The team scored zero across all categories, which is the absolute best score attainable and why the 5-star rating was given.

With locally-sourced produce, the catering team and Care Café provide food and drink for patients and visitors. In-patients receive three meals a day with a menu choice for each, plus drinks and snacks when requested. Special dietary requirements are also accommodated.

Patients and visitors often comment on the excellence of the food at Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre on its Facebook page. Comments include: “an excellent coffee shop”; “even the food is lovely”, and; “the food was so good I didn’t want to come home!”

Mark White, Hospital Director at Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre, commented: “My congratulations go to our catering team for this superb achievement. Everything we do centres around providing our patients with the best care and experience, and that includes food and drink.”

Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre was the first hospital of its kind in the country to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. The hospital offers a range of care including orthopaedic, cataract and general surgery and endoscopic investigations, and it has a self-pay option for patients who do not wish to wait for treatment longer than they would prefer, or who have been told that the treatment they require is no longer available on the NHS. If your GP agrees that you need treatment you can ask them to refer you to the hospital for treatment – it is part of your choice as an NHS patient.
