Eggstremely wonderful woodland
As the Friends of Ham Woods promote their Easter programme of crafty, arty and edible family fun, Plymouth City Council are commending them for the hours of work that they have put in to making Ham Woods an enjoyable place to be.
After more than 4 years of working with the Council’s Stepping Stones to Nature team, the Friends of Ham Woods are being thanked for their hard work and dedication and have been given a cheque for nearly £400.
Now with Nature Reserve status and having been submitted for a prestigious Green Flag Award 2015, Ham Woods is an inviting green landscape, with woodlands, meadows, babbling brook and beautiful valley, all teaming with wildlife.
Plymouth City Council Leader, Tudor Evans has today marked the many hundreds of hours of volunteer work that the Friends of Ham Woods have spent working on the nature reserve, he said:
“The only reason that we are able to have such an active programme of events in Ham Woods this Easter is quite simply because of the Friends.
We initially supported the friends for about 4 years and since then they have taken on Ham Woods and really run with it, creating a community orchard, wildlife meadow and a new network of paths.
So this Easter why not pop down to Ham Woods, and show your support for these incredible volunteers.”
The funds which have been given to the Friends, came from the annual grant allocation which is given to each Councillor to fund community activities and projects in their ward.
The £400 which has been awarded to the Friends will be spent on a new bench to replace one that is damaged and a new sign.
For more than five years now the Council have been working with communities to improve natural spaces in Plymouth. This includes working with partners such as the Devon Wildlife Trust to further support the community volunteer groups across Plymouth, helping them to care for, and improve their neighbourhood spaces.
