Plymouth star crowned SW Energy Champion of the Year

Plymouth Energy Community’s CEO and Plymouth City Council’s Low Carbon Team Leader, Alistair Macpherson, has been crowned South West Energy Champion, sponsored by BSR Connect at this year’s Green Energy Awards.

Since 2013, Alistair has led the internationally acclaimed community benefit society from a council initiative, into a big-thinking venture pushing for better service for vulnerable customers and developing community owned renewables. Over 13,000 households have saved in excess of £630,000 thanks to PEC’s Energy Team, who provide a holistic approach to tackling bills, fuel debt, insulation, heating, damp and mould.

PEC have leveraged £7.5 million of inward investment to Plymouth, launched three community share offers allowing residents to invest in local renewable energy and installed 33 community-owned solar arrays. These are saving host schools and organisations around £90,000 per year and generating enough energy to power 2000 homes annually.

“I accept this award with a huge sense of pride” said Alistair, “Here in Plymouth, we continue to prove that local authorities and community energy organisations can partner as unstoppable force for good in the battle for a fairer and cleaner energy system. I am massively grateful for the opportunity to do the work that I do and for the support of PEC’s fantastic staff team of advisors, its volunteer Directors and of Plymouth City Council.”

The Green Energy Awards are an annual event organised by Regen, an independent non for profit, to honour the innovation, dedication and creative ingenuity enabling the transformation to clean, smart and flexible energy.

The Awards took place on Tuesday 28 November after Renewable Futures, Regens’ annual conference and exhibition, which focused on strategies for transforming to a smart energy system. It brought together industry leaders, policy makers and community energy groups, providing valuable insight into the emerging market opportunities, the chance to build new partnerships and drive innovation forward.
